No Colour, All Contrast
Black and Grey

Black and grey is not simply a colour tattoo with the colour left out. The entire image is built from one pigment, diluted to different strengths, so every bit of depth has to come from contrast alone. Where a colour piece can separate two shapes by making one red and one blue, black and grey has to separate them with value — which is why the style rewards patient shading and punishes rushing.

It suits some subjects better than almost anything else. Animal portraits, religious imagery, script, clocks, roses and memorial pieces all sit naturally in greywash. Skin texture, fur and metal in particular look more convincing without colour competing for attention.

The practical advantage is longevity. Black pigment is the most stable ink over time, so a well-shaded black and grey piece tends to hold its readability longer than a heavily coloured one — something worth weighing in Goa, where sun exposure is a genuine factor in how a tattoo ages.

Before You Book
Worth Knowing

Contrast needs room. Greywash relies on the gap between light and dark. Shrink a detailed design too far and those values collapse into one grey mass as it heals, so we will often recommend going slightly larger than you first planned.

Expect more than one sitting for anything approaching a half sleeve. Shading is layered, and skin needs to settle between passes.

Healed black and grey looks softer than it does on the day. That is normal — fresh greywash always appears higher-contrast while the skin is still reacting.

Sun is the main enemy. Follow the aftercare guidance carefully, particularly around sun and sea water in the first few weeks.

If you want bold solid black rather than graduated shading, tribal and armband work are the other direction to consider.
